XE Currency Converter is highly recommended for every traveller. Its free, easy to use, and – best of all, since it uses live currency rates – completely accurate.
You can choose your currencies for your destination and convert backwards and forwards
This is a great app but extremely useful for Cruise ship guests that have to deal with multiple currencies.
I use the web based XE Currency Converter on my laptop as well
2. A World Clock
This is a must
Some phone have a built in world clock, most tablets dont. They are easy to find in the app store.This one is easily customisable.
By clicking on the plus sign in the top right corner I can add a city.
I normally have my home city, my youngest daughter interstate (daylight savings please QLD) the main countries or cities we are going to, if they are near and in the same time zone I will just have one. Sometimes it may not have your city eg Guangzhou China, but nearby Macau is on there.
3 . A Weather app
They are easy to find in the app store. Find one thats either world wide or just your destination.
Great for knowing whether to grab the sunscreen or the umbrella and raincoat.
4. Wi-Fi Finder

6.. An Email program
Whether you use web base gmail or hotmail or the others most have a free app you can download to check and send email while travellling

Once again there are many apps , when it comes to accuracy I have found Google Translate is still the best free tool
around, whether online or in app form.While it struggles with longer, more complicated sentences, for quick phrase or word checks, it still beats all the other apps tested.
9 a Toilet Finder or Bathroom locator
Finding a bathroom fast when you are out and about is one of the challenges of travelling with older people(or kids). In fact, you might think twice about venturing out to far if you don't know where the closest bathrooms are located. So download one (or more) of these bathroom locator apps, and you won't get caught short next time you've got to go when you're on the go.

10 A Trip Journal or diary
Before the trip I put Hotels, flights, booked tours, booked sights in our diary app.If there are public holidays at any destinations I put those too.
If we are on a cruise I put Ports, Port arrive and leave times, seadays, formal nights, theme dress nights, before and after cruise flights and hotels,
During the holiday I nightly put just a few lines about where we were , what we did so we can jog memories later.
11 ICE
In case you dont know ICE stands for In Case of Emergency
I have this on the first screen of all my devices. In fact on my phone I have one that comes on even if the phone is locked so Emergency personnel can get the information even if they cant unlock my phone.ICE apps are a convenient way to store information needed by rescuers and doctors, if you are a victim of an emergency.
In addition to a list of contacts of the people that should be notified, it also allows you to save information about taken medications, Medical Conditions, diseases, allergies and other health information.
I put my age and weight in as well in case they have to give me any emergency medication.
12 SeatGuru
I usually use this app when booking seats, sometimes though I will get to the airport and be offered other seats.
This is where SeatGuru is essential
Many flight booking apps may find you the cheapest tickets but not many provide enough crucial information -- from seat pitch to the proximity to the toilet
The new SeatGuru app developed by TripAdvisor has those details covered.
It not only allows flight search but also features the website's signature color-coded seating plan -- green is a good seat and red is bad.
When clicked, a pop-up box provides seating advice and amenity information.
